The Internet and its related personal communication methods are now a fundamental part of our home-life and work-life.
Yet the rich array of communication options that the Internet and mobile phone technology has brought to our lives has had little impact on every day clinical systems.
Video conferencing has been available for many years, and there is now a mature range of products that deliver excellent quality and features, but at a price. The big disadvantage is that video conferencing is not integrated with the patients care record directly.
At the simpler end of the spectrum we still have a wide variety of communication methods that can be deployed to assist and support the clinical team, such as text messages (SMS), email and chat.
