A Windows service is a process that runs in the background on all Windows OS machines (PC's, laptops and servers) that provides a service. Examples of such are database processes such as MS SQL Server that provide database access services.
Windows services are controlled using the Control Panel applet Administrative Tools -> Services. You can also access the same applet by type services.msc in the Run box.
